The Story
I’m Kaye, a lifelong resident of the Cagayan Valley in the northern Philippines. I’ve always had a deep appreciation for the natural world, the weather patterns, and wildlife. Growing up in this beautiful region—surrounded by the Sierra Madre to the east and the Cordillera Central to the west, with the mighty Cagayan River running through the center—has made me even more appreciate the majesty of it all. Our region is blessed with rich farmland and stunning landscapes, and the people are warm and resilient.
My journey with climate change awareness started early. When I was seven, I came across a poster about the greenhouse effect and I understood how gases could trap heat and warm our planet. But like many kids, my concerns about climate change faded as life moved on.
That childhood awareness, though, grew into adult realities. I’ve seen firsthand how our tropical weather patterns have changed. Summers that were once merely hot are now unbearable. The summer of 2023 highlighted the future we are all facing, with one of the most intense El Niño events adding to the scorching heat.
But climate change is not just about hotter days. Rising sea levels, stronger and more frequent typhoons, and ecosystems under threat are all signs of a world undergoing dramatic changes. The poorest communities, despite contributing the least to this crisis, bear the heaviest burden of one of the most profound human-made inequality in modern times — climate injustice.
Mission
I founded Cagayan Valley Climate Resilience as a platform for science communication, where I use my skills as a writer and teacher to spread awareness about climate change. The goal is to share information that helps our region and others adapt to these challenges. Through this site, we focus on low-cost, low-tech solutions that people can use to become more resilient in the face of climate change.
And with this is a deep commitment to improving the quality of life in Cagayan Valley, where both humans and nature can thrive in harmony. CVCR’s goal is to help the community push forward an environment that nurtures all living beings, with the recognition that a healthy, sustainable future is a basic human right.
While this movement may not change the world, CVCR believes every effort counts. And by spreading knowledge and promoting adaptation techniques, we hope to make life a little easier for those affected the most by the changes happening in our environment.
